TEXTILE RECYCLING

The greatest fashion sin:
waste

Nowhere is our surplus society and consumerism more evident than in our wardrobes. 750,000 tonnes of jeans, sweaters and shoes etc are discarded in Germany every single year. The least we can do is ensure that these textiles are reused or recycled in the best possible way. We have the right solutions to do just this.

Giving new life to unwanted textiles. In a whole variety of ways

Unwanted garments are valuable materials that are not only available in large quantities across the globe but also have a huge potential to grow sustainability. Tapping into this opportunity, our operations ensure textiles are reused or recycled – on several different levels and using a variety of approaches. Thanks to our solutions, we help make sure that used and unwanted garments are put to sensible use, helping to conserve natural resources. At the same time, we focus on creating the best possible value chain. Well-preserved clothing is sent for reuse. Only the garments that cannot be worn again are processed or recycled for other purposes.

Shared responsibility, shared operations. The Looper Textile Co. joint venture

If used and unwanted garments are to be reused and/or recycled, then they first have to be collected and sorted into different categories. This certainly does not happen enough with used textiles at the moment. At present, every second discarded garment across the EU ends up in the residual waste bin rather than in textile reuse and recycling schemes. Things really need to be improved here. This is one of the reasons why REMONDIS and the H&M Group decided to found Looper Textile Co. The aim of this joint venture in the circular economy and textile trade is to optimise the collection, sorting and reuse/recycling of used and unwanted textiles – starting with bringing together used textiles from a wide variety of collection points all the way through to professionally classifying the collected garments . Classifying them into over 200 categories gives the greatest likelihood of each garment finding its most suitable next use.

Textile recycling also has an important socio-economic effect. It helps to meet the global demand for clothing and creates easily accessible jobs. Looper Textile Co. invests in training its sorting staff so that they can directly contribute to extending the life of unwanted garments.

Innovative concepts to grow collection rates

Alongside this joint venture, we are always looking for further solutions to make the whole subject of used textiles even more sustainable and efficient. Just one example of this is our Looper Collect service, which is currently being rolled out in several major German cities. Instead of relying on conventional stationary clothes banks, we offer a free pick-up service for used textiles that can be booked online. All garments are collected using electric vehicles – helping to conserve natural resources, curb climate change and make the whole process even more sustainable.
