SUSTAINABILITY CERTIFICATE

Would you like more sustainability for your firm? We’ve got something for you

We help companies to run a sustainable business by recovering raw materials and energy from their waste. We record exactly how our circular economy and recycling operations benefit their sustainability efforts in a scientifically certified document.

Our Sustainability Certificate – proof that companies are conserving resources and curbing climate change

If the drive towards greater sustainability is to be a success, then everyone has to join in. Which is why both our customers working in the industrial, commercial and retail sectors and our public sector partnerships across Germany have the option of being presented with our special Sustainability Certificate. This document provides detailed proof of how our waste treatment systems cut their greenhouse gas emissions and reduce their consumption of virgin raw materials and energy. A unique way of adding value to their business – and a unique offer that our customers have been benefiting from for many years now. The whole of the chain of services provided by REMONDIS is taken into account in the analysis – from the collection of the waste, to the transport, sorting and treatment, to the recycling of each fraction.

Scientifically robust & fit for the future

Our Sustainability Certificate was developed together with the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT. Both the evaluation tool and the certificate, which are available for businesses, are based on the DIN EN ISO 14040/14044 life cycle assessments and takes the standards set out in the GHG Protocol (Scope 3.5) into account. The findings of the Sustainability Certificate can also be integrated into the corporate sustainability reporting process set out in the CSRD – a process that more and more companies will have to implement from 2024 onwards.

A quick look at the benefits of our Sustainability Certificate

Certification of the whole of the waste management chain

From supplying the bins through to recycling the materials: the amount of virgin raw materials saved, energy saved/produced, and greenhouse gases cut are recorded to the exact kilowatt hour or tonne. The only certificate in the industry able to do this.

Efficient support for the GewAbfV [Commercial Waste Ordinance]

The certificate helps uncover where there is potential for a business to improve its use of resources, storage systems and transport distances. The positive impact of adjustments made to waste segregation rates and waste treatment at your firm can clearly be seen by the improvement in the sustainability parameters.

Integration into corporate reports

Thanks to the scientific accreditation from the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT, the certificate can be integrated into public, environmental and sustainability reports.

A credible, image-enhancement tool

Our Sustainability Certificate is a scientifically certified document that can be presented to the public, local authorities, business partners and customers.

Sustainability: a factor for deciding for or against a company

Sustainability has been playing a key role in the business world for a long while now. More and more consumers are checking out products and services to see just how environmentally friendly they really are. And they put their words into action by, for example, deliberately choosing products that have been made with recycled raw materials or that can be easily recycled. Sustainability is also becoming increasingly important in private and public procurement processes and may be the deciding factor for or against one or other of the bidders. Against this backdrop, therefore, it is hardly surprising that almost every company considers this subject to be of great importance. On top of this, an ever greater number of businesses will have to compile a sustainability report in the future. Managers will then be reaching for our Sustainability Certificate and making it an essential part of their in-house strategy.

For all those who wish to know the exact details: how the assessment works

Collection

This is all about the collection of the different types of waste from your business premises. The volume of material and the number of individual bins that need to be emptied are documented for each waste stream as well as to what extent the materials have been pre-sorted.

Transport

Smart logistics – such as short transport routes and the correct selection of bins – ensure that fuel consumption and carbon emissions are kept as low as possible during transport.

Pre-treatment/processing

The initial processing stage involves us cutting up the material, preparing it for further recycling and separating it into material streams segregated strictly according to type. Following this, the specialist plants use a variety of machines and facilities to transform the pre-treated materials into high-quality recycled raw materials. The amount of energy consumed and the volume of emissions caused by this work primarily depend on the quality of the feedstock.

Subsequent transport

The processed materials are transported to production plants where they are used as recycled raw materials. Here, too, the negative values are kept to a minimum by planning smart routes and making sure the trucks are utilised in the best possible way.

Recycling (materials/energy recovery)

The use of recycled raw materials is one of the most important positive factors along the whole of the material life cycle. Non-recyclable materials also have a positive impact on the overall results if they can be used to generate energy.

Substitution of raw materials

Both production plants and the environment can benefit when high-quality recycled raw materials are used to substitute other materials. This is a key positive factor in the calculations as this reduces the need for virgin raw materials.

More and more of our subsidiaries, business divisions and sister companies are following our lead and offering their own sustainability certificates using this evaluation tool. Some of our companies that specialise in particular fields of business or particular types of waste have even got together with the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT to draw up their own specialist evaluation methods and certificates. Examples here include our experts for recycling solvents RESOLVE, and PET-Recycling, a company that specialises in plastics recycling and belongs to REMONDIS Recycling.
